Pool fence and barrier rules in O'Fallon
- Fence height: At least 48 inches above grade, measured on the side facing away from the pool (2021 ISPSC 305.2.1; the city did not amend this section)
- Gates: Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, and be able to take a lock. For residential pools, a latch release reachable from outside must be at least 54 inches above the ground (2021 ISPSC 305.3, 305.3.3).
- Doors and windows from the house: 2021 ISPSC 305.4 (not amended by the city): if the house wall is part of the barrier, doors and low operable windows to the pool area need a UL 2017 listed alarm, or the pool needs a listed ASTM F1346 safety cover, or another approved means such as self-closing, self-latching doors.
- Also required: City amendments: the ISPSC sections allowing removable mesh fences as a barrier (305.2.4 and 305.2.4.1) are deleted. Where horizontal members are less than 45 inches apart, they must be on the pool side, and vertical spacing may not exceed 1 3/4 inches; fences 54 inches or taller are exempt from this. A spa or hot tub with a lockable ASTM F1346 cover does not need a barrier.
