Pool fence and barrier rules in Wentzville
- Fence height: At least 48 inches, measured from finished grade; on a scalloped fence, the lowest point of the scallop must be at least 48 inches
- Gates: All gates must swing out away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, and be able to take a lock. If the latch release is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, it must be on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top, with no opening over 1/2 inch within 18 inches of the latch.
- Doors and windows from the house: If the house is part of the barrier, use one of these: an approved alarm on every door with direct access to the pool; self-closing, self-latching doors with the latch at least 54 inches above the floor; or an approved power safety cover on the pool.
- Also required: No more than 2 inches between finish grade and the bottom of the barrier. Openings may not exceed 4 inches. Chain link mesh may be at most 1 1/4 inch square, or slatted down to 1 3/4 inches. Temporary construction fencing is required once the hole is dug and must stay until the permanent enclosure is in. No pool may be used until the permanent enclosure is installed and the city gives final approval.
Pool permit fees in Wentzville
Estimated cost of construction x 0.0050, minimum $35.00, plus a $50 plan review fee (pool guide; matches the Building Fees page for residential miscellaneous permits).
How far a pool must be from property lines
Pool walls must be at least 5 feet from side and rear property lines and cannot be in an easement. Minimum setbacks also depend on the property's zoning. Overhead power lines may not be over the pool or within 10 feet horizontally of the inside pool walls. Underground wiring may not run under the pool or within 5 feet of the inside wall.
Inspections
- Footing/hole inspection once the yard is leveled at the pool location, to verify location and soil; provide the engineer's soil certification at this time
- Rough plumbing, bonding, and ground electric inspection, before any concrete is poured
- Final inspection after work is complete, with all barriers in place
Other things to know before you dig
- City permit approval does not count as subdivision approval. Check your HOA's requirements (stated in the pool guide).
- In-ground submittals need a plot plan showing current and proposed grading, swale elevations, and stormwater flow arrows; steel and bonding details; a pool cross-section; and a soils letter sealed by a Professional Engineer.
- High-plasticity soil must be remediated for in-ground pools.
- Drainage must stay compliant with the approved subdivision grading plan. You may not alter water flow to or from neighbors, and silt control is required until vegetation is re-established. Excavated spoils must be removed promptly.
- Electrical: a single locking GFCI receptacle for the pump must be 6 to 15 feet from the inside pool wall. A general-purpose receptacle is required 10 to 20 feet from the pool. All receptacles within 20 feet must be GFCI protected. Metal parts within 5 feet must be bonded with #8 solid copper.
- Contractors need a City of Wentzville contractor license, renewed by February 28 each year.
Codes in use
2021 IRC and 2021 ISPSC per the pool guide (the guide's general rules also cite the '2014 NEC', while the city's Building Codes page lists the 2020 NEC)
